Lesson 3 of 5, 13 min with the exercise
Work from your own documents
Get answers based on your material instead of the model's memory.
When you paste or upload a document, tell the model to use it as the only source. Otherwise it will mix your document with whatever it remembers from training, and you won't be able to see the join.
Answer using only the document below. After each point, quote the sentence it came from. If the document doesn't answer the question, say "not in the document". Question: [your question] Document: [paste document]
Asking for quotes makes checking quick: search the document for the quote and see whether it's there and means what the answer says.
Very long documents can be cut off or skimmed. If an answer seems to miss something, send the relevant section on its own.
See it in practice
Invented example: you ask about the notice period in a supplier contract. The answer says "30 days" and quotes clause 8.2. You search the contract, and clause 8.2 does say 30 days, but clause 12 changes it to 90 days for renewals. Finding the quote took seconds. Asking "does anything else in the document change this?" is what caught clause 12.
Common mistake: Trusting a quote without searching for it. Models can produce a quote that sounds right and isn't in the document.
Try it
Pick a policy or contract you know. Ask three questions: two it answers and one it doesn't. See whether the model says "not in the document" on the third.
You're done when
- Every answer points to a passage you found in the document
- It said "not in the document" when that was true
